Art Expo Malaysia 2012

WHEN the International Art Expo Malaysia (AEM) 2007 burst into the art landscape, it caught many by surprise – that it actually happened at all, although many would have been clued in on the buzz.

Reason was that Malaysia was still not known for having a great appreciation or even awareness of art, to respond to the sophistication of the fledgling art-fair and art-auction business. Government support was unheard of, while the big corporate boys were unlikely to open their chequebooks for something uncharted and unknown.

But Vincent Sim, the man behind AEM, is not someone easily deterred. After all, he had his dream come true when he headed the 1st, and only, Art Tourism Malaysia, at the Malacca International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh, in 2006. For starters, most of the exhibitors were artists themselves, as many local galleries were skeptical that it would work. But the artists-run booths did have its advantages, for many collectors as well as the laymen got to talk to the artists about their works, their lives and their struggles.

Despite having to splashed out large sums of money and knowing that it was going to be a red-ink financial affair, Vincent Sim persevered, in his naive but challenging belief of bringing some of the best art and artists from all over the world to Kuala Lumpur, under one roof.

6th Annual Malaysian Student Leaders Summit 2012

The United Kingdom and Eire Council of Malaysian Students (UKEC) or Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar Malaysia di United Kingdom dan Eire (MPPM UK Eire) is the umbrella body for Malaysian student societies in universities and colleges across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Currently, with over 80 Malaysian Societies as its constituent members, the UKEC serves as an integral platform representing the collective interests of over 6,500 Malaysian students here in the UK and Ireland.
The UKEC hosts three flagship events annually alongside other events throughout the year.
These three events are the Projek Amanat Negara in January, Career Fair in March, and the Malaysian Student Leaders Summit in August. Nation building is the main theme for all theevents, along with commitment towards human capital development and leadership training.
The Outline of MSLS
This summit, now in its sixth year, will serve as an avenue for intellectual and productive dialogue between Malaysian student leaders and prominent national figures from myriad fields. Through MSLS, it is hoped that participants will develop a better understanding of the issues facing our nation, and hence be better prepared to undertake the unique challenges that lie ahead in charting the way forward for Malaysia.
The summit, which will be held for 2 full days, will see the participation of about 650 Malaysian student leaders from various universities across the globe. The summit, entirely free of charge for participants, aims to foster development of our future leaders and provide them with an open, non-partisan avenue for intellectual discourse
Objectives
1. To organize a high impact national summit under the UKEC in collaboration with other Malaysian student bodies from around the world. This summit would serve to enhance the leadership skills of Malaysian students, and to increase awareness of the imperative role they play in Nation building as well as ways they can contribute.
2. To create an opportunity for Malaysian students to share ideas with Malaysian leaders and embrace networking.
3. To gain invaluable knowledge from the experiences of prominent national leaders from diverse backgrounds and industries.
4. To confront even the most sensitive issues such as:
a. Promises and aspirations in the build up to the 13th General Elections
b. The public policies of parties from both divides
c. The upholding of the spirit of constitutionalism
